AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese Announces Retirement Plans

MONTGOMERY – Alabama High School Athletic Association Executive Director Steve Savarese announced plans to step down from the position he has held for the last 15 years effective July 1. He made the announcement at Wednesday’s annual Central Board of Control spring meeting.
   Savarese did agree to remain in the position at the pleasure of the CBOC until his replacement has been hired and has had ample time to adjust to the position.

Wesley Button named new Head Boys Basketball Coach at Opelka High School

Opelika, AL—Wesley Button has been named the new head boys basketball coach at Opelika
High School. “We are excited to welcome Coach Wesley Button as the new OHS head boys basketball
coach,” stated Farrell Seymore, OHS Principal. “Coach Button has been a valuable member of our
staff for a number of years and has grown into a tremendous teacher and coach.” Button has served
as the interim Opelika High School head boys basketball coach since January 2021.
Button graduated from the University of Alabama in 2015. He earned a Bachelor of Science in
Education and currently teaches history at Opelika High School. At OHS, Button has served as the
Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach since 2015. He also coached 9th grade basketball (2018-2020) and
was a varsity soccer assistant coach (2015-2020).
“I’m super excited to have the opportunity to coach these guys. They’re my guys and we’re
poised to be very competitive next season. My expectations are high and I look forward to working
with the team,” stated Button.
Button is originally from Decatur, AL. When not at work, he and his wife Jaclyn enjoy spending
time with their dogs Tag and Samford.

Beauregard High School Gets New Head Football Coach

4/14/21 Justin Jones, former defensive coordinator at Prattville High School was named the new head football coach at Beauregard High School. Taking over after Coach Carter left, Coach Jones brings 16 years of coaching experience with him and has turned struggling programs into winning programs. Congratulation Coach Jones.

OHS Softball Senior Night

Before the Opelika – Russell Co softball game, 5 OHS Senior players were recognized. They were: 21 Raelee Fenn, #19 Elizabeth Gaverlavage, #14 Talia Griffin, #11 Daysia Jones, #9 Ashlyn Kendick. Opelika celebrated their senior night with a 15 – 0 win in a called game in the 4th, game over Russell Co. #opelikahighschool, #godawgs, #opelika, #opelikasoftball, #OpelikaBulldogSoftball
