Here is a report from Coach Jim Davis on the Bulldogs.
Today, January 15, 2018, marked the 4th Annual Bulldawg Brawl hosted by the Opelika Wrestling Bulldogs. The Bulldawg Brawl featured 13 teams from around the state of Alabama and we had one visitor from Georgia who all came to Opelika in search of a trophy. When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, the Oxford Yellow Jackets repeated as champions. They were followed by the Wetumpka Indians as runner-ups and the Benjamin Russell Wildcats took claim of the 3rd place trophy.
Our Wrestling Dawgs had a pretty good day. We were 3-1 and finished in 5th place. We started the Brawl against the Spanish Fort Toros who took an early 30-0 lead that was too much for us to overcome. We eventually fought back, but in the end we lost 30-54. Our next dual saw us square up against the Northview Cougars. The Dawgs responded quickly and went on to a 40-23 victory. We ended pool play at 1-1 therefore the best we could finish was 5th as we cross-bracketed against the other pools. Our first placement match saw us matched up against the Pell City Panthers, one of our region 2 6A foes. We were able to avenge a 39-42 loss that Pell City put on us in the Region Duals tourney by winning 37-30 today. So our final match was against the Auburn Tigers. Winner of the this rivalry match would be the 5th place team. We took an early lead and held on for the 42-33 victory.

We would like to give a BIG THANK YOU!!!!!! to all the volunteers today who helped make the tournament a success. The Opelika Middle School Dawgs helped out, there were many parents on hand to help out and many fans there to help root for the Dawgs!! It took all of us as a family to get it done. Special thanks to Coach Ben Landers for all his hard work and preparation!
We will be on the road this Thursday, Jan 18 as we go to Smiths Station to battle the Panthers and Russell County Warriors as do our JV Dawgs. Then Friday and Saturday the varsity will be at the Jeremy Ragsdale Invitational at St.Clair County High School in Odenville, Al. Hope to see many of you great Dawgs supporters at one of the aforementioned events.
